Funds Awarded for Artists and Communities Pilot in Ontario

Toronto, January 19, 1998 - Funds were announced today for recipients of Artists and Communities, a collaborative pilot program financed through a partnership between the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), the Canada Council for the Arts, the Toronto Arts Council and the Laidlaw Foundation.

Four communities in Ontario will benefit from the $200,000 program. Recipients of the Artists and Communities awards are:

  • Clay and Paper Theatre working with the Friends of Dufferin Grove Park in Toronto ($52,000)
  • Everybody's Theatre Company working with members of the Eramosa Township in Eden Mills ($44,000)
  • Artist Sue Richards/Art Jam and Guerrilla Galleries working with the City of Guelph, the Aids Committee of Guelph and the Guelph District Multicultural Centre in Guelph ($52,000)
  • Choreographer Bill James/Atlas Moves Watching Dance working with YouthLink and Kensington Youth Theatre Employment Services (KYTES) in Toronto ($52,000)

The OAC administered the peer review process of the program on behalf of the partners. A total of 51 applications were received from across the province.

"We are impressed with the large number of Ontarians from all walks of life who were interested in working closely with artists on projects significant to their communities," said Diane Labelle-Davey, Director of Arts Development at OAC.

"Just as artists and arts organizations are financing their work from several sources, arts funders are forging partnerships with the private sector and other funders to support large scale artistic and community initiatives," added Nathan Gilbert, Executive Director of the Laidlaw Foundation.

The partners will participate in the evaluation process which will determine the benefits of these kinds of collaborations. This program was developed to support innovative collaborations between professional artists and non-arts organizations or groups which engage in the creative process to advance a community goal.
